Online, your credibility is huge. I learned a big lesson today. For the first time ever, I mailed an email and got hate mail – but it was nice hate mail. It was, I cannot believe you endorse this product, I trusted you more than that, the email goes against what you have been teaching us.
So the first thing I did was I sent out an email to apologize. I learned a serious lesson today – only deal with people online whom you really trust. Only send emails to your email list that are congruent with everything you represent online. Only send emails to your list if you genuinely support the product – not just because it is an easy email to send.
So I say that your credibility online is huge – I have worked hard to create respect among my list members – and just one email has threatened to change my credibility online.
So how do you maintain credibility online?
1) Your word must always be solid. You must online represent things and people who are congruent with your own values.
2) Whatever you say or write must line up with everything else you say and write. Be careful with your name – be careful with whom you associate.
3) You really must take the time to fix mistakes when they happen. If you are wrong, apologize. Just do it – your subscribers, others who know you, will appreciate it – and reward you for it.
In short, do the right thing online – and be consistent – and be true to yourself.
